Past Present And Future

When I was young, my father went out secretly and bought an Atari (remember that old thing?) and everybody in the family loved it (including my mom). The only game we had was pac-man, but that was good enough to satisfy our video gaming needs. Before long we had a few more games, including Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and many others which I do not remember. We never had too much money so my parents couldn't really afford systems and games, so besides the atari, we had to pay for them ourselves.

Not too long after, my oldest brother Jason (he is 6 years older than me) saved up money for the greatly expected and loved Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). I don't remember any of the games we had except for Mario Bros. 1,2 and 3, Kung Fu (Ninjas?), and Lode Runner.

When I first heard of the Super Nintendo I was excited! I immediately started saving money, I did extra chores and never spent my allowances for weeks (It takes a long time to save $100 with a $3 allowance). Finally I had enough to buy a USED Super Nintendo, with one controller and Super Mario World, but only if we traded in our Nintendo. My brother agreed and I promised to pay him back so that the Super Nintendo would be mine. I then bought NHLPA Hockey '93 and we all loved it. For christmas '95 or '94 I got Aladdin for my Super Nes. Until 1996 I didn't buy anymore games (only one joystick).

The Nintendo 64. I don't remember when i first heard of this but I think it was when I first received my first issue of Nintendo Power (a few years back), that i had got free (2 years subscription) thanks to a Donkey Kong Country 2 Contest on the Honey Nut Cheerios boxes. I was amazed! I remember that from the beginning of 1996 till about November 1996, I saved up as much as I could (raking leaves, etc...) and i remember being proud to be able to say I hadn't spent a cent! Not one cent! It was tough but by Christmas, I finally had enough money (about $435) to buy the system, Wave Race 64 and an RF modulator (because my TV was too old too work with the a/v cables). I played it day and night, but my most memorable part was the eternal search I had to do to find one (especially around christmas). I phoned everywhere everyday for the whole month of december until finally, on December 23rd, My dad heard a rumor that a shipment of n64s were arriving at wal-mart. I arrived 10 minutes before the openning of the store yet 13 other people had already arrived. I was afraid i may not have gotten one. But luckily the shipment had 24 n64s, pheeew!!

By the month of February I got a part time job working for my brother so I was getting about 20 dollars a week instead of 5. I then bought mario 64, even though I knew I'd regret it. And I did. I finished it in a very short time (5 days to beat the 3rd bowser, 2 weeks to get all 120 stars (I only played a bit everyday after I passed bowser)). Then, in March, came Mario Kart 64. I loved it. You wouldn't beleive the hassle I had to go through just to RENT one! I even had to push over a little kid (5 or 6 years old) to pass him to get the last one. The moment I played it I had to have it. I didn't have enough money saved up, so I had to sacrifice my Super Nes, Aladdin, 1 controller and about 20 bucks to get it. My brother quit his job so I was out of work too. I was back too getting 7 dollars a week.

Then, in July, when Star Fox 64 came out, I rented it the first day it was out, I even got it before the lady had time to put it on the shelf! As with Mario 64, the part of my brain that looks only for graphics kicked in. I saw how good it was and "had" to have it. Seeing that I had enough money to buy it, I set out the next day to Toys 'R' Us and bought it. I regret it to this day. I finished it very quickly, and only played the vs mode a few times after I finished it (my brothers didn't want to play against me anymore because even with a level 3 handicap I would win all the time).

Near the end of August, my mom wanted to rent a movie, but she didn't want to watch it alone, so I said I would watch it with her (Jungle 2 Jungle is not my idea of a good time) if she would rent me a game. The only game available was tetrisphere (besides Mario and Wave Race, both which I already own). I would have prefered GoldenEye, but it would do. I loved it the second I completed the basic training! I always loved puzzle games, but this one was different. It was excellent! I am seriously thinking of trading Star Fox or Mario for Tetrisphere, but it would cost me about $45 if I traded Mario, and $20 if I traded Star Fox. The only problem is that I would like to keep the Rumble Pak, for future games.

Now I'm hoping to have enough money for Silicon Valley, Zelda 64, Yoshi's Story, the 64DD and one Rumble Pak by the end of February or March. I can't wait!
